António Varela advocates "seismic change" in Cape Verde's leadership: "The future belongs to all of us - not just a few"

In an incisive and symbolically charged reflection, António Varela launched a strong appeal for a "seismic change in leadership" in Cape Verde, arguing that the country can no longer remain trapped in a governance model marked, according to him, by "indifference, corruption and mediocrity" over the last few decades.

For Varela, the transformation that Cape Verde needs will not come from isolated measures, such as "a new airplane" or "a political speech", but from the collective and conscious action of the Cape Verdean people. "Change must be built by us - together. And it must be transformative - a complete 360-degree turn," he declared.

The text, which is circulating as a political and social manifesto, highlights the main demands of Cape Verdean society: decent housing, health as a universal right, safety on the streets and inclusive education that does not force young people to emigrate in search of better opportunities.

Varela also stresses the need to integrate all the islands and communities in this process, from Brava to São Nicolau, from Santiago to Santo Antão, ensuring that no one is left behind. In the same tone, he sends a direct message to the diaspora, considering it a fundamental part of national reconstruction. "They are not foreigners. They are Cape Verdeans. They bring knowledge, skills and capital. And now we must roll out the red carpet for them to return and help us rebuild this nation," he appealed.

His reflection paints a picture of urgency and hope, highlighting that the "winds of change" are already being felt in conversations, protests and in the hearts of the people. "If we stop now, mediocrity wins. If we stop now, Cape Verde loses. But we won't stop. We will rise up. We will build. We are going to transform," he insisted.

In closing, Varela reinforced the idea that the moment is decisive and that the country can no longer wait: "The time is now. The people are ready. Change has already begun. And together - together - we will win!".
